Statement from Jamal Osman on his Re-election to the City Council Representing Ward 6

Statement from Jamal Osman on his Re-election to the City Council Representing Ward 6.

November 8, 2023 — Minneapolis, MN — Council Member Jamal Osman (W6, DFL) was re-elected to another two-year term to the Minneapolis City Council - after handily dispatching his opponents in the second round of counting in Minneapolis’ ‘Rank Choice Voting’ system. This is the third election victory - having won a special election in 2020, a regular election in 2021 and now this election in 2023.

Council Member Jamal Osman (W6, DFL) issued the following statement after confirmation of his election victory:

Thank you Ward 6 Neighbors! Your voices were heard — and I promise to keep fighting for all of you!

You told me you want a better deal for our Renters — and strong rent stabilization. You said you want permanently affordable social housing and a public housing system we can all be proud of.

You know that Workers are the backbone of our great city — and that they all deserve fair wages, worker protections, and the right to organize under a union banner.

You told me you want Neighborhoods — and not just downtown — to be re-centered in the conversations about building a better city. Where neighborhood associations and community organizations are supported with the resources they need and that they have been calling out for.

Where constituent services are not ignored by the new “strong mayor” system — but addressed by city departments effectively and in a timely manner when requested by their Council representatives.

And you said Neighbors must be included and consulted when we tackle the difficult quality of life issues challenging us all — like addiction, homelessness, encampments and expanded public safety.

I hear you loud and clear — and I will make sure the Mayor and my colleagues on the City Council hear you too.

Lastly, I want to thank my amazing family and friends! You all gave me the strength —and sometimes, the push — to keep fighting.

I want to especially thank the strong Unions that have had this campaign’s back throughout this campaign - LiUNA Minnesota & North Dakota and the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation! You will always have my support as we build the better city our workers and neighbors are asking for.

And I want to send my personal thanks to US Rep. Ilhan Omar, Attorney General Keith Ellison, State Senator Omar Fateh, Council Members Lisa Goodman and Jason Chavez — and all my other colleagues, who know me and know my commitment to serve everyone in Ward 6!

Thank you Ward 6! I am humbled by your support and I am dedicated to keep fighting the good fights —for all of you!

—JAMAL OSMAN, Phillips West Neighbor
