Jamal Joins Neighbors at the “3rd Annual ‘Stop the Violence’ Community Cookout”

CM Jamal Osman Celebrates Safety, Unity, and Community at the “3rd Annual Stop the Violence Community Cookout” in Peavey Field Park.
July 28, 2023 — Minneapolis, MN — Amidst a scorching summer afternoon, Council Member Jamal Osman joined with neighbors, community leaders, businesses, and local stakeholders at the “3rd Annual Stop the Violence Community Cookout” on Thursday. This uplifting event, championed by T.O.U.C.H. Outreach in partnership with the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization, served as a powerful counter to violence and crime, exemplifying the true spirit of community and unity.
"I was thrilled to be part of this fantastic community event - to meet and listen to so many people who came out to take part and share in the fun despite the heat," shared Council Member Osman.
"Events like this are the heartbeat of what builds safe neighborhoods and fosters peaceful communities. When we come together - when we genuinely know and support each other - that's when we truly build the thriving, safe, and resilient neighborhoods we all want."
The City of Minneapolis and numerous other champions and sponsors also united behind this event, making the community cookout a true collaborative success. There was no shortage of excitement with a large waterslide, lively music, games, and abundant free food. Many, like Jamal, also enjoyed refreshing snow cones to beat the heat.
T.O.U.C.H. Outreach, one of the dedicated nonprofit organizations behind the event, strives to engage with communities directly, connecting with people on the street to understand their needs and provide essential resources. Trained in de-escalation, they step in to help deter crime through crisis prevention, reimagining public safety through a public health approach that spreads love and hope to communities through outreach, community engagement, and violence prevention.
"I wholeheartedly share their belief that ‘preventing violence is possible when all community members are included in creating the solution’ – and the T.O.U.C.H. Outreach approach is one of the many powerful solutions we must embrace when discussing the future of public safety in our neighborhoods," said CM Jamal Osman.”
In our city, it is essential that everyone feels safe and secure - free from the threat of crime or unequal justice. As someone who deeply understands the injustices that occur, CM Osman recognizes the critical need to address systemic issues that contribute to the overrepresentation of Black individuals in the criminal justice system.
Building trust and fostering accountability through robust police oversight are crucial components of public safety, and we must continue to support and improve accountability on all fronts.
"We need to bridge the gap and continually build trust between our public safety professionals and the community," Council Member Osman passionately stated. "By working together and truly investing in safe and healthy neighborhoods, we can ensure that safety and compassion go hand in hand - allowing every resident to feel protected and valued.”
The 'Stop the Violence' Community Cookout was definitely a huge hit - and everyone who spoke with CM Osman at the vent know he loved being included - and out in the heat!
Bringing together a diverse crowd and fostering a strong sense of unity is what community is all about - so CM Osman would like to thank everyone for their hard work - and thanks to everyone who made time to come out to share in the experience.
Jamal will continue to work hand-in-hand with neighborhoods and public safety champions – because we are all aiming to make a safer and more prosperous Minneapolis. Our shared vision for positive change is deeply rooted in the voices, hopes, and dreams of the people of our neighborhoods.
Please Rank #1 CM Jamal Osman for City Council - and let's Re-elect a Ward 6 Democrat Fighting for Renters, Workers and Neighborhoods!
